Good storage boxes: double protection for your storage items

If you are thinking of getting boxes for self storage, it’s important to buy good ones. Jamie Hudson of Box Boys Packing explains why, and how.

When storing your items it makes sense to choose a secure unit from a reputable company, so it only makes sense to apply the same logic to choosing your packaging materials.

You are going to have to buy boxes

Gone are the days when it was easy to pick up heavy-duty boxes of all different sizes from the local supermarket. Due to recycling policies, supermarkets have their waste disposal arranged in a more ethical and organised manner, meaning that their cast-offs are not available to home movers wanting to save a bit of money. Though this is good immediate news for the environment, it means that home movers often have to resort to buying boxes from the Internet. Putting aside the valid environmental argument that perhaps this greatly increases the amount of boxes being produced, it leaves the customer with added costs to an already costly list of procedures.

The temptation is to save money wherever possible. But beware: cutting corners when moving home, or preparing possessions for self storage, can actually end up being more costly in the long run. Imagine hiring a cheap removals company that treats your belongings without respect and ends up damaging your precious belongings. This could greatly increase the stress of a move and result in the loss of irreplaceable items or mounting insurance premiums.

So make sure you buy good boxes: single or double walled?

Boxes are easily available at the click of a button. Thousands of companies are clamouring for your business. Seemingly excellent deals are all over the web, but look at the details of their moving kits. Are the boxes single walled or are they double walled corrugated cardboard packing boxes well-suited for moving and storing your items safely? This is the single most important question to ask when buying boxes.

Not only do many companies sacrifice quality to make their moving packs cheaper, but some go further in attempts to save money less transparently. Often box packs are shown to include double walled boxes, but on further inspection the numbers are made up with the same amount of single walled boxes, included to bring the overall cost down.

So buyer beware!

Consumer confidence

Secondly, does the company offer some form of guarantee? How professional does the website look? It is very easy to have a removals packaging site up and running within a couple of days but the consistency of a site, the existence of a terms and conditions page, and direct lines of contact are essential to give you the confidence you need when ordering packing boxes for moving or self storage online.

There are of course a number of reputable firms offering boxes, including such companies as Box Boys. Visit their website, www.boxboys.co.uk for details on how to obtain double walled cardboard boxes.

  1. Couldn’t agree more with what Jamie is saying. It never ceases to amaze me that people pay top prices for weak single walled cartons. It is a shame because there are good boxes out there at reasonable prices your site and mine prove this.
Buying strong removal boxes is the best option because they can often be used several times, not the case with single walled cartons.

Supermarkets always have discarded boxes from the veg and fruit. Most have an open top but they are strong enough to hold books, crockery wrapped in newspaper, household tools etc. If necessary cut up the bases of similar boxes and then wrap with ctretch film obtained from Viking direct or similar suppliers. If you get similar boxes they will also stack well. Don’t forgot to use a marker to record what’s in the boxes. Also number the boxes and record on a sepearte master list. Saves you searching for your files etc
