Storage.co.uk has just announced the winners of its self storage Awards for 2011–12. We will be running a series of reviews of the winners in the ten Award categories. Here is the first.
Storage.co.uk is gearing up to hand out its annual Awards for Excellence, now in their second year. Submissions and nominations will be warmly welcomed.
Most self storage companies now sell boxes, bubblewrap, packing tape and padlocks ‒ and a whole range of other storage essentials. It makes sense: sell specialist products to your niche market at the time when they most need it. But some self storage companies do it better than others.
For most self storage companies, the internet now accounts for a significant proportion of their new customers. This has made it vital to have a website that is attractive, well-designed and easy to use ‒ and it is these qualities that have distinguished the winners of the Storage.co.uk Award for Website Design.
“The customer is always right”, as Harry Selfridge’s famous mantra goes. This is certainly the case in self storage, a fast-growing industry where being known for good service can be the difference between someone signing up a unit, or checking out your competitor up the road.

The Storage.co.uk Award for Storage Facility Design was introduced as part of our campaign to improve architectural design in the self storage industry. A number of companies have done the self storage industry proud in this field, from which five clear winners emerged.
Self storage companies have good reasons for not quoting prices online ‒ and statistically we have found that most of them don’t. But customers can find this very frustrating and off-putting. So this Award celebrates companies that make their prices particularly clear and accessible to customers from the outset.
Self Storage presents unique challenges for the photographer. Storage companies pride themselves on their efficient spaces and functionality. So how do you make the industry look visually arresting? We feel that our winners have done just that.
It seems amazing to reflect that no one had heard of Facebook or Twitter less than a decade ago. Now that so much advertising has moved online, social media has become the best way for firms to begin building a personal relationship with their clients before they’ve even visited the storage centre.
