A new facility in Newport for Fox Self Storage

Based in Wales and the West Midlands, Fox Moving & Storage has been in business for four decades, trading on the natural synergy between removals and storage. It opened its first self storage facility in Cardiff  back in 1992, and has recently expanded into Newport.

The new facility in Newport, on Leeway Industrial Estate, close to the city centre, was opened in May by the Mayor of Newport at a special opening reception for clients, staff and friends of the business.

The 17,000 sq ft warehouse is divided into two areas of activity: space dedicated to self storage, and space for traditional container storage from the removals side of the business. The 120 brand new self storage units are spread over three floors, serviced by a lift; they range in size from 15 sq ft (“broom cupboard”, as they call it) to 200 sq ft (“garage”). The site also has a one-stop shop for all customers’ moving and storage needs.

Why Newport?

Managing Director, Paul Fox said: “Our family have strong business and personal links to Newport and have been looking for a suitable location in the city for some time. We are delighted now to be able to now offer services to the people of the city, both in our private and business markets.”

Fox Moving & Storage secured the freehold site in August of last year and has invested approximately £1m rebuilding the facilities. The original structure on the site was stripped back to its steel frame, then it was rebuilt from the ground up, adding 2 metres to its height.

Paul Fox is proud to have been able to carry out this refit “to the highest modern standards”, and notes that this, together with similar improvements made by the other tenants on the Leeway, has helped regenerate the area, in keeping with the extensive housing and infrastructure projects being completed in that part of the City.

The Fox story

Fox Moving & Storage is a family firm (the photo above shows three generations: Paul on the left, father Roy in the middle, and Daniel on the right). This year it celebrates its 40th anniversary. The Fox Self Storage division was formed in 1995 in response to customer demand for secure, easy-access lock-up units.

Fox now have self storage facilities in Cwmbran, Cardiff and Newport in East South Wales, and a fourth self storage site at Stourbridge in the West Midlands.

Paul says: “Self storage is a natural evolution for us. Since opening our first facility in Cardiff we have seen steady levels of growth. Customers want to deal with a company that is expert in its field and are comfortable with a long established local business. We made a considerable effort to refocus the business and have made a huge investment over the last ten years to develop our self storage facilities. We are optimistic that our latest venture will be well received and hope to expand further in the near future.”
