Self Storage & hospices: U store depot shows the way

When Storage.co.uk announced its National Declutter Week campaign to help hospices, Dave Crocker of U store depot, in Northern Ireland, responded to say that’s just what they’ve already been doing. And here he tells us how.

U store depot provides Self storage facilities with 24-hour access in purpose-built individual storage rooms. We also provide storage for pallets, bulk goods and removal crates. We currently have in excess of 5000 sq ft of office accommodation for rent. And we are in the final throws of finishing seven business units each with 1600 sq ft for use by new businesses looking for cost-effective start-up terms. A 45,000 sq ft warehouse attached to our self storage business is our next project! Anyone need more space?

Giving space to the Foyle Hospice

Three years ago we approached the Foyle Hospice in Derry/Londonderry as we felt we could offer them free storage facilities for bulky donated items.

The Foyle Hospice have a 300 sq ft unit permanently rented to them at nil cost, and whenever extra space is needed they can use an 80 sq ft unit as a temporary overspill.

You would be surprised by the amount of stuff our self storage customers leave in a specially designated area for the hospice to use in their local charity shops: wardrobes, beds, chests of drawers, televisions, pushchairs, toys, clothing – the list is endless!

We explain to all new customers that unwanted items can be donated to the hospice and sometimes customers declutter before putting their belongings into storage, saving them space in their unit. Others leave items when they vacate.

The Hospice finds our 24-hour access ideal for their needs as they are able to get into their unit at any time.

Why have we done this? It’s an easy way of putting something back into a very worthy local cause, and our storage customers feel that they don’t need to throw away stuff they have outgrown that can be used by others that will appreciate it.

Contact your local hospice fund raising manager today! I am certain that he or she will be delighted you did.

  1. I want to put things (some furniture, books, papers) into storage for a year. Does anyone have any particular recommendations for a storage facility in Kingston, or are they all very similar?
